Rules of engagement -
ideas
- Make sure there is someone to fill following roles
- Facilitator- leads meeting, holds others accountable
- Remind people at the beginning
- Try not to repeat their ideas
- Keep it concise
- Twinkles= I agree
- One person talks at a time
- Think beyond yourself – What is best for the group?
- Uses Stack method and other methods – go around – small group discussion, etc.
- Respectfully terminates long monologues (if no time keeper).
- Minute keeper – records the discussion in an organized and understandable way
- Time keeper
- Times sharing – Four minutes?
- Says “time” or “minute” so that its neutral and not attacking anyone personally
- Change amount of time based on subject/ number of people present
- Vibe- keeper – Makes sure meeting is fair and healthy – keeps an eye on meeting as a whole – some examples: Are more shy people other groups free to share? Is one person or group of people dominating the meeting?
- The people who aren’t participating need to be quiet and go somewhere else to talk
- Post meeting minutes weekly
What OCP has been to
you – positive?
- Place to sleep
- Place to meet new friends
- Place to provide basic services like meals to those who need them
- Shelter from the elements/ a place of shelter
- Help/assistance (social services, work applications)
- Special activities/ events; good programming
- Exposure to new things like music
- Come to hang out and socialize
- Fun atmosphere/ always something to do/ socialize/ hang out
- Outlet for creativity and a way to help others
- New experience; meet people from diff. walks of life (broaden horizons)
- Overcome anger and find peace and joy; helpful staff; second chances (mercy)
- More people are saying it broadened their horizons
- Hearing what people have to say; flexibility and listening
- Been a good place to sit and talk with people –
allowing people to use these kinds of strengths
Negative
- People bum too many cigarettes or money off of you
- Would like to see it open more
- Dispenses information but the info is unnecessarily politically slanted
- Would like more workday participation- some people are always working and others don’t work at all (violates community integrity)
- Help people make progress (people become complacent here)
- The place needs to be kept neat because the mood of the place
- Coming in while under the influences/ bringing drugs and alcohol should mean being kicked off premises because there are children here. Wasn’t previously enforced and isn’t enforced now.
- It is a non-hierarchical organization – this is good, but sometimes it seems like people walk all over the staff because there isn’t a lot of accountability – sometimes people don’t take the staff seriously – sometimes not enough order
What would you like
it to be?
- Several people mentioned wanting more classes/ education
- Need to do more to heal people (do more to lead people to Christ). Move toward restoration and healing
- People aren’t GROWING and are not engaged while some are completely engaged (lack of cohesiveness)
- Intentionality about helping people progress about complacency
- Should be open more
- We should have this conversation always
- OCP refers people to services and people can come to work on job applications – a more positive atmosphere would be better for the whole community – if a person is disrespectful, they can leave for a week until they can be kinder or more respectful
- More people want more focus on helping people grow and find peace
- Get into the community more and offering more support
- We should have more movies or fun things like Bingo (entertainment). Need more classes
- Tuesday workday activity- not everyone is into manual labor, so they can work on a political issue by giving presentations or marching downtown. (Political awareness?)
- OCP people doing something in the community- doing something outside of themselves
- Teach them to do something for others
Additional Possible
Ideas
- Have meetings when they’re closed because its distracting when people are here
Why does OCP exist
and what are we trying to address?
- Engaging people who are here in the discussion
